The Complete Saga
Book Collection
Following the Cataclysm, Krynn is plunged into centuries of chaos, famine, and political ruin. The gods seemingly abandon the world, and magic becomes feared or forgotten. Faith shatters, and the people turn to survival. This is the era in which the Chronicles trilogy begins. The return of the dragons and the rediscovery of divine and arcane magic signal a slow but vital rebirth of hope. The War of the Lance becomes a pivotal event, restoring balance to the world and reuniting mortals with the gods. Still, wounds from the Cataclysm run deep, and the struggle between good and evil remains far from over.
The Dragonlance saga continues with this fascinating prelude to Dragons of Autumn Twilight!
Five years before the War of the Lance engulfs Krynn, Sturm and Kitiara embark on a wild adventure of magic, power, and love . . .
The Companions have gone their separate ways, each vowing to return with news of the growing darkness in Ansalon. Sturm Brightblade, a warrior whose honor is his life, and Kitiara, a passionate woman of uncertain loyalties, travel north in search of Sturm’s long-lost father.
Before they reach their destination, a band of gnomes begs for their help. But nothing with gnomes ever goes as planned . . . The two adventurers are soon thrown into a perilous adventure that will take them beyond the reaches of Ansalon through love and hate, to darkness and light.
Before they were enemies on the battlefield, they were reluctant allies on a desperate journey. In the years before the companions reunited in Solace, Sturm Brightblade, noble son of a disgraced Solamnic family, and Kitiara uth Matar, fiery mercenary and daughter of chaos, found themselves traveling together across a troubled Krynn.
Sturm, bound by the rigid code of the Knights of Solamnia, seeks to reclaim his family’s lost honor. After his father's mysterious disappearance, he sets out to reach the fabled city of Solamnia itself, carrying with him the Brightblade legacy and dreams of knighthood. Yet he is still young, idealistic, and painfully unaware of the corruption and disillusionment that has taken root in the Order.
Kitiara, meanwhile, lives by no such code. A skilled warrior with a volatile temper and cunning wit, she drifts from one job to another, driven by survival and ambition. She joins Sturm on the road not out of loyalty, but because the path promises coin, danger, and the occasional thrill of battle. Their goals could not be more different, yet their fates become strangely entwined.
Their journey quickly turns from pilgrimage to peril. When the two stumble upon the ruins of a strange and ancient civilization, they are caught in the machinations of an otherworldly people known as the Ergothian Starseekers—a secretive group attempting to unlock forgotten magic. Their leader, obsessed with restoring a long-lost technological relic, draws Sturm and Kitiara into a conflict far beyond their comprehension.
Separated in the chaos, Sturm is forced to question everything he believes about honor, loyalty, and justice, while Kitiara, ever the survivor, must decide whether she is willing to sacrifice power for another person’s ideals. Along the way, they encounter deadly beasts, crumbling empires, and truths buried beneath the surface of history.
As the ruins collapse and the relic's terrible purpose is revealed, the two companions make their escape—changed, if not entirely aligned. Sturm moves one step closer to becoming the knight he longs to be, while Kitiara begins her slow turn toward the path that will eventually lead her to Takhisis and the Dragonarmies.
Darkness and Light is a tale of contrast—of nobility and pragmatism, of duty and desire. It offers an early glimpse into the characters of two future legends and reminds us that even those on opposite sides of war may once have shared the same road, if only for a time.
